I woke up this morning to see my very own Prime Minister trending on Twitter. OvernightAustralia’s PM Julia Gillard has responded to a text messaging scandal within her own political party by attacking the Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott. Smart move huh?
Through out the epic 15 minute speech Gillard labels the Opposition Leader as a hypocritical misogynist and recalls in gory detail sexist remarks he has made – all whilst standing just a few feet away.
Regardless of your political preference you would have to agree that was well played Julia. She has struck a chord amongst women and the story has been reported on websites around the world including Asia and the Middle East. The video highlights the sexist behaviours that women are still forced to deal with even at the highest levels of government including double standards, undermining and crude jokes.
Jump to 2:24 minutes for the juicy part. Here are some of the more memorable quotes:
“I will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by this man, I will not”
“I hope the leader of the opposition has got of piece a paper and is writing out his regisination
“If he wants to know what misogyny looks like in modernAustraliahe doesn’t need a motion in the House of Representiatives, he needs a mirror”
Media outlets such are labelling the speech as nothing short of spectacular. Support on twitter is pouring in:
@terripsiakis: Just watched Julia Gillard’s speech with my 3 yr old daughter, when it finished she said “I want to watch that lady again.”
@Shaila: Based on this clip, i’m a huge fan of Australian politics. Calling out bullshit and hypocrisy & keeping people honest
and what of her own speaker Peter Slipper that sent the crude text message? He resigned last night
